Grant Monaghan & Associates provides services in the fields of Prosthetics, Orthotics and Podiatry. The combination of these three disciplines in one practice allows us to provide a complementary and multi-faceted approach to patient care. At RehabMatters we work closely with the rest of the therapy team to obtain the best results from a combined approach to care.
What is prosthetics?
In the case of an amputation, a prosthesis is the artificial extension that replaces the missing part of the body. Prosthetists are specialists in the designing, fitting and fabricating of these artificial limbs.
What is orthotics?
Orthotists are trained in the science and art of custom designing and constructing appliances or devices called orthotics to help in both the prevention or correction of deformities or biomechanical anomalies that may hinder normal movement or efficient biomechanical functioning. These also aid in joint support and alignment to improve posture, function and mobility. These orthotic appliances and devices include braces, splints or moulded shoe inserts and may vary in size to fit something small like a toe or finger or foot, to full leg and spinal braces.
What is podiatry?
A podiatrist is a professional who is trained in the care of the foot and ankle. Podiatrists examine, diagnose, treat and prevent the onset of foot ailments by using biomechanical, surgical and other treatment methods.
Podiatrists are often called upon by other physicians and health care professionals for consultation and treatment of the foot problems experienced by people from children to seniors (PASA, www.podiatrist.co.za).
